Modeling the Effects of EGR and Injection Pressure on Emissions in a High-Speed Direct-Injection Diesel Engine

Experimental data is used in conjunction with multi-dimensional modeling in a modified version of the KIVA-3V code to characterize the emissions behavior of a high-speed, direct-injection diesel engine. Injection pressure and EGR are varied across a range of typical small-bore diesel operating conditions and the resulting soot-NOx tradeoff is analyzed. Good agreement is obtained between experimental and modeling trends; the HSDI engine shows increasing soot and decreasing NOx with higher EGR and lower injection pressure. The model also indicates that most of the NOx is formed in the region where the bulk of the initial heat release first takes place, both for zero and high EGR cases. The mechanism of NOx reduction with high EGR is shown to be primarily through a decrease in thermal NOx formation rate.

Modeling the Effects of Drop Drag and Breakup on Fuel Sprays

Spray models have been evaluated using experimentally measured trajectories and drop sizes of single drops injected into a high relative velocity gas flow. The computations were made using a modified version of the KIVA-2 code. It was found that the drop drag coefficient and the drop breakup time model constant had to be adjusted in order to match the measurements. Based on these findings, a new drop drag submodel is proposed in which the drop drag coefficient changes dynamically with the flow conditions. The model accounts for the effects of drop distortion and oscillation due to the relative motion between the drop and the gas. The value of the drag coefficient varies between the two limits of that of a rigid sphere (no distortion) and that of a disk (maximum distortion). The modified model was also applied to diesel sprays. The results show that the spray tip penetration is relatively insensitive to the value used for the drop drag coefficient.

Modeling the Effects of Auxiliary Gas Injection on Diesel Engine Combustion and Emissions

The effect of auxiliary gas injection on diesel engine combustion and emissions was studied using KIVA, a multidimensional computational fluid dynamics code. Auxiliary gas injection (AGI) is the injection of gas, in addition to the fuel injection, directly into the combustion chamber of a diesel engine. The objective of AGI is to influence the diesel combustion via mixing to reduce the emissions of pollutants (soot and NOx). In this study, the accuracy of modeling high-speed gas jets on very coarse computational grids was addressed. KIVA was found to inaccurately resolve jet flows near walls. The cause of this inaccuracy was traced to the RNG k - ϵ turbulence model with the law-of-the-wall boundary condition used by KIVA. By prescribing the length scale near the nozzle exit, excellent agreement between computed and theoretical jet penetration was obtained for a transient jet into a quiescent chamber at various operating conditions.

Modeling of Multicomponent Fuels Using Continuous Distributions with Application to Droplet Evaporation and Sprays

In multidimensional modeling, fuels have been represented predominantly by single components, such as octane for gasoline. Several bicomponent studies have been performed, but these are still limited in their ability to represent real fuels, which are blends of as many as 300 components. This study outlines a method by which the fuel composition is represented by a distribution function of the fuel molecular weight. This allows a much wider range of compositions to be modeled, and only requires including two additional “species” besides the fuel, namely the mean and second moment of the distribution. This approach has been previously presented but is applied here to multidimensional calculations. Results are presented for single component droplet vaporization for comparison with single component fuel predictions, as well as results for a multicomponent gasoline and a diesel droplet.

Modeling of Equivalence Ratio Effects on Particulate Formation in a Spark-Ignition Engine under Premixed Conditions

3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations have been performed to study particulate formation in a Spark-Ignition (SI) engine under premixed conditions. A semi-detailed soot model and a chemical kinetic model, including poly-aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) formation, were coupled with a spark ignition model and the G equation flame propagation model for SI engine simulations and for predictions of soot mass and particulate number density. The simulation results for in-cylinder pressure and particle size distribution (PSDs) are compared to available experimental studies of equivalence ratio effects during premixed operation. Good predictions are observed with regard to cylinder pressure, combustion phasing and engine load. Qualitative agreements of in-cylinder particle distributions were also obtained and the results are helpful to understand particulate formation processes.

Modeling and Simulation of a Dual Fuel (Diesel/Natural Gas) Engine With Multidimensional CFD

A dual fuel engine simulation model was formulated and the combustion process of a diesel/natural gas dual fuel engine was studied using an updated KIVA-3V Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) code. The dual fuel engine ignition and combustion process is complicated since it includes diesel injection, atomization and ignition, superimposed with premixed natural gas combustion. However, understanding of the combustion process is critical for engine performance optimization. Starting from a previously validated Characteristic-Timescale diesel combustion model, a natural gas combustion model was implemented and added to simulate the ignition and combustion process in a dual fuel bus engine. Available engine test data were used for validation of both the diesel-only and the premixed spark-ignition operation regimes. A new formulation of the Characteristic-Timescale combustion model was then introduced to allow smooth transition between the combustion regimes.

Modeling and Experiments of HCCI Engine Combustion Using Detailed Chemical Kinetics with Multidimensional CFD

Detailed chemical kinetics was implemented in the KIVA-3V multidimensional CFD code to study the combustion process in Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engines. The CHEMKIN code was implemented such that the chemistry and flow solutions were coupled. Detailed reaction mechanisms were used to simulate the fuel chemistry of ignition and combustion. Effects of turbulent mixing on the reaction rates were also considered. The model was validated using the experimental data from two modified heavy-duty diesel engines, including a Volvo engine and a Caterpillar engine operated at the HCCI mode. The results show that good levels of agreement were obtained using the present KIVA/CHEMKIN model for a wide range of engine conditions, including various fuels, injection systems, engine speeds, and EGR levels. Ignition timings were predicted well without the need to adjust any kinetic constants.

Modeling and Experiments of Dual-Fuel Engine Combustion and Emissions

The combustion and emissions of a diesel/natural gas dual-fuel engine are studied. Available engine experimental data demonstrates that the dual-fuel configuration provides a potential alternative to diesel engine operation for reducing emissions. The experiments are compared to multi-dimensional model results. The computer code used is based on the KIVA-3V code and consists of updated sub-models to simulate more accurately the fuel spray atomization, auto-ignition, combustion and emissions processes. The model results show that dual-fuel engine combustion and emissions are well predicted by the present multi-dimensional model. Significant reduction in NOx emissions is observed in both the experiments and simulations when natural gas is substituted for diesel fuel. The HC emissions are under predicted by numerical model as the natural gas substitution is increased.

Modeling Premixed and Direct Injection SI Engine Combustion Using the G-Equation Model

A level set G-equation model has been developed to model the combustion process in spark ignition engines. The spark ignition process was modeled using an improved version of the Discrete Particle Ignition Kernel (DPIK) model. The two models were implemented into the KIVA-3V code to simulate SI engine combustion under both premixed and direct injection conditions. In the ignition model, the ignition kernel growth is tracked by Lagrangian markers, and spark discharge energy and flow turbulence effects on the kernel growth are considered. Once the ignition kernel grows to a size where the turbulent flame is fully developed, the G-equation model is used to track the mean turbulent flame evolution. When combined with a characteristic time scale combustion model, the models were also used to simulate stratified combustion in DISI engines, where the triple flame structure must be considered.

Modeling Knock in Spark-Ignition Engines Using a G-equation Combustion Model Incorporating Detailed Chemical Kinetics

In this paper, knock in a Ford single cylinder direct-injection spark-ignition (DISI) engine was modeled and investigated using the KIVA-3V code with a G-equation combustion model coupled with detailed chemical kinetics. The deflagrative turbulent flame propagation was described by the G-equation combustion model. A 22-species, 42-reaction iso-octane (iC8H18) mechanism was adopted to model the auto-ignition process of the gasoline/air/residual-gas mixture ahead of the flame front. The iso-octane mechanism was originally validated by ignition delay tests in a rapid compression machine. In this study, the mechanism was tested by comparing the simulated ignition delay time in a constant volume mesh with the values measured in a shock tube under different initial temperature, pressure and equivalence ratio conditions, and acceptable agreements were obtained.

An improved discrete particle ignition kernel (DPIK) model and the G-equation combustion model have been developed and implemented in KIVA-3V. In the ignition model, the spark ignition kernel growth is tracked by Lagrangian markers and the spark discharge energy and flow turbulence effects on the ignition kernel growth are considered. The predicted ignition kernel size was compared with the available measurements and good agreement was obtained. Once the ignition kernel grows to a size where the turbulent flame is fully developed, the level set method (G-equation) is used to track the mean turbulent flame propagation. It is shown that, by ignoring the detailed turbulent flame brush structure, fine numerical resolution is not needed, thus making the models suitable for use in multidimensional modeling of SI engine combustion.

Modeling Fuel System Performance and Its Effect on Spray Characteristics

Fuel Injection System (FIS) research on injection pressure, timing control, and rate shaping, and studies on the modeling of injector nozzle flows and their effect on fuel spray characteristics are usually conducted separately. Only recently has the fuel injection and spraying process been studied as a complete system, i.e., including both the high-pressure fuel delivery and its effect on the nozzle flow characteristics, including nozzle cavitation. A methodology for coupling the fuel injection system and its effect on spray characteristics is presented here. The method is applied to an example case of a conventional pump-line-nozzle system. Mathematical models for characterizing the flows from the pump to the nozzle are formulated and solved using the Method of Characteristics and finite difference techniques. The nozzle internal flow is modeled using zero-dimensional flow models, in which the nozzle cavitation and its effect on the nozzle exit flow are accounted for.

Modeling Fuel Preparation and Stratified Combustion in a Gasoline Direct Injection Engine

Fuel preparation and stratified combustion were studied for a conceptual gasoline Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition (GDI or DISI) engine by computer simulations. The primary interest was on the effects of different injector orientations and the effects of tumble ratio for late injection cases at a partial load operating condition. A modified KIVA-3V code that includes improved spray breakup and wall impingement and combustion models was used. A new ignition kernel model, called DPIK, was developed to describe the early flame growth process. The model uses Lagrangian marker particles to describe the flame positions. The computational results reveal that spray wall impingement is important and the fuel distribution is controlled by the spray momentum and the combustion chamber shape. The injector orientation significantly influences the fuel stratification pattern, which results in different combustion characteristics.

Modeling Engine Spray/Wall Impingement

A computer model was used to study the impingement of sprays on walls. The spray model accounts for the effects of drop breakup, drop collision and coalescence, and the effect of drops on the gas turbulence. These effects have been shown to be important in high-pressure sprays where breakup of the liquid yields a core region near the nozzle containing large drops. A new submodel was developed to describe the spray/wall interaction process. The model uses an analogy with the oblique impact on a wall of liquid jets. Following impact, the trajectory of a drop is specified to be tangent to the wall surface. The computations were compared with recent endoscope pictures of engine sprays impinging on a piston bowl and also with constant-volume-bomb measurements of spray shape and penetration. Predictions of the effect of engine swirl, ambient gas pressure (density), wall inclination angle and the distance from the nozzle to the wall, were in good qualitative agreement with the experiments.

Modeling Drop Drag Effects on Fuel Spray Impingement in Direct Injection Diesel Engines

A modified drop drag (MOD) model based on the droplet deformation and breakup (DDB) model has been developed and implemented in the KIVA II code for describing fuel spray impingement against the walls of the combustion chamber in D.I. diesel engines. The model accounts for the effects of both the drop's frontal area and its drag coefficient as a function of its distortion. In the MDD model, the stochastic rotation of drops that have impacted and bounced off the wall is considered. This makes it possible to model the highly distorted drop's frontal area variation and its effect on the drag coefficient in sprays. At the same time, the distribution of sizes of drops formed from parent drops after their breakups is modeled by using a stochastic model. A modified RNG κ - ε model is also included in the present computations. The details of fuel spray impingement against a wall were investigated by using the present models.

Modeling Diesel Engine Spray Vaporization and Combustion

Diesel engine in-cylinder combustion processes have been studied using computational models with particular attention to spray development, vaporization, fuel/air mixture formation and combustion. A thermodynamic zero-dimensional cycle analysis program was used to determine initial conditions for the multidimensional calculations. A modified version of the time-dependent, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics code KIVA-II was used for the computations, with a detailed treatment for the spray calculations and a simplified model for combustion. The calculations were used to obtain an understanding of the potential predictive capabilities of the models. It was found that there is a strong sensitivity of the results to numerical grid resolution. With proper grid resolution, the calculations were found to reproduce experimental data for non- vaporizing and vaporizing sprays. However, for vaporizing sprays with combustion, extremely fine grids are needed.

Modeling Diesel Engine NOx and Soot Reduction with Optimized Two-Stage Combustion

A multi-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code with detailed chemistry, the KIVA-CHEMKIN-GA code, was employed in this study, where Genetic Algorithms (GA) were used to optimize heavy-duty diesel engine operating parameters. A two-stage combustion (TSC) concept was explored to optimize the combustion process at high speed (1737 rev/min) and medium load (57% load). Two combustion modes were combined in this concept. The first stage is ideally Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion and the second stage is diffusion combustion under high temperature and low oxygen concentration conditions. This can be achieved for example by optimization of two-stage combustion using multiple injection or sprays from two different injectors.

Modeling Autoignition and Engine Knock Under Spark Ignition Conditions

A computer model that is able to predict the occurrence of knock in spark ignition engines has been developed and implemented into the KIVA-3V code. Three major sub-models were used to simulate the overall process, namely the spark ignition model, combustion model, and end-gas auto-ignition models. The spark ignition and early flame development is modeled by a particle marker technique to locate the flame kernel. The characteristic-time combustion model is applied to simulate the propagation of the regular flame. The autoignition chemistry in the end-gas was modeled by a reduced chemical kinetics mechanism that is based on the Shell model. The present model was validated by simulating the experimental data in three different engines. The spark ignition and the combustion models were first validated by simulating a premixed Caterpillar engine that was converted to run on propane. Computed cylinder pressure agrees well with the experimental data.

Model Parameter Sensitivity of Mixing and UHC/CO Emissions in a PPCI, Low-Load Optical Diesel Engine

The present study attempted to model experimental results obtained on an optical engine at the Sandia National Laboratory. Measurements of in-cylinder unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) distributions were provided using advanced optical diagnostics on a near production type piston. Previous multidimensional modeling provided accurate pressure profiles and heat release rate (HRR) predictions. However, the experimental UHC distribution was not matched, and the model predicted UHC extending from the bowl into the squish region in the expansion stroke. To explore the causes of this discrepancy a parametric study was performed using a variety of initial conditions, boundary conditions and model constants to explore their effects on the UHC distribution. Of the initial conditions, the swirl ratio was found to have the biggest impact on the UHC distribution.

Measured and Predicted Soot Particle Emissions from Natural Gas Engines

Due to the new challenge of meeting number-based regulations for particulate matter (PM), a numerical and experimental study has been conducted to better understand particulate formation in engines fuelled with compressed natural gas. The study has been conducted on a Heavy-Duty, Euro VI, 4-cylinder, spark ignited engine, with multipoint sequential phased injection and stoichiometric combustion. For the experimental measurements two different instruments were used: a condensation particle counter (CPC) and a fast-response particle size spectrometer (DMS) the latter able also to provide a particle size distribution of the measured particles in the range from 5 to 1000 nm. Experimental measurements in both stationary and transient conditions were carried out. The data using the World Harmonized Transient Cycle (WHTC) were useful to detect which operating conditions lead to high numbers of particles. Then a further transient test was used for a more detailed and deeper analysis.
